LIBRARY

Cupertino Library has the highest circulation among the members of the Santa Clara County Library. It holds a collection of more than 308,000 volumes, as well as periodicals, compact discs, audio and video cassettes, CD-ROMs, and DVDs.

The library has a Web catalog, a telnet catalog, and a dial-in catalog with access from home or from work. Its Dynix catalog provides both graphical and text-based access to the World Wide Web and to a growing number of reference and full-text magazine databases. Santa Clara County Library's Home Page address is: http://www.santaclaracountylib.org. The library provides a dial-in catalog at 1-877-471-3349. Phone renewals for most materials are available anytime within the greater Bay Area, except 4 - 6 a.m daily, at 1-800-471-0991.

Adult reference librarians conduct library tours and online catalog demonstrations twice a week, from 1-2 p.m. on Wednesdays and from 2-3 p.m. on Saturdays. Drop-in beginning level Internet searching classes for adults are also available on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m.

Children's reference librarians present weekly story times for specific age groups, and a semi-annual series of family story times in Mandarin Chinese. Beginning Internet classes for children and families are also offered, as are special activities for school age children during the summer as part of the annual Summer Reading Club. Summer Reading for Teens is also offered. Awards for both summer programs are funded by the Friends of the Cupertino Library through their individual memberships, on-going lobby book sales, and their three annual book sales in February, May, and October.

The Cupertino Library Foundation raises funds by means of an annual mailer and occasional fundraising events and provides information on planned gifts to the library.

An ATLAS (Academy for Teaching Literacy to Adult Students) adult literacy class, co-sponsored by the library and the Fremont Union High School District Adult Education Program, meets weekly at the FUHSD Adult Education Center while the library is in its temporary site. For more information on the ATLAS program, call (408) 522-2735.

The temporary library is open seven days a week: Monday and Tuesday 12-9, Wednesday and Thursday 10-9, Friday and Saturday 10-6, and Sunday 1-5. For more information, call (408) 446-1677. The Cupertino Temporary Library is located at 10441 Bandley Drive, Cupertino, off De Anza Blvd. between Lazaneo and Mariani.

Adults over age 50 can find a full calendar of opportunities for learning, volunteering, and enjoying life. There are exercise classes (over 30 hours a week), a computer lab and classes, language instruction including English as a second language, and cultural and special interest classes. The Senior Center provides all these opportunities due to a dedicated group of volunteers. Workshops include "Planning Ahead" and Divorce Issues, caregiver and bereavement support groups, music, books, arts and film groups, plus computer and camcorder interest groups. Health insurance, housing, long-term care insurance, tax, and legal counseling are all available by appointment. CUPERTINO COMMUNITY SERVICES - People Helping People

Cupertino Community Services (CCS) is a nonprofit, charitable, community-based agency serving the needs of low-income West Valley residents. CCS prevents hunger by distributing more than 100,000 pounds of food each year to hundreds of our less fortunate neighbors. To prevent the eviction of families from their homes and the shut-off of utilities, CCS provides rental assistance and help with PG&E bills. As a Salvation Army Service Center, CCS provides vouchers for gasoline, prescription drugs and shoes. The CCS Holiday program coordinates the distribution of Thanksgiving, Spring, and Summer food baskets, and organizes an "Adopt-A-family" Program in December.

CCS also offers a continuum of care in housing services. The CCS Rotating Shelter Program is a collaboration with local religious congregations and volunteers that provide food and shelter to employable homeless men. CCS also helps men and women with children to temporarily rent low-income housing in the CCS Transitional Housing program. Through the CCS Affordable Housing Program, qualified families and individuals in the Cupertino community may obtain homes at below market rates.

But CCS cannot provide emergency assistance to the needy each year without community support. Generous donations of time, services and money are needed so that CCS can help our less fortunate neighbors. CCS is located in the Quinlan Community Center at 10185 N. Stelling Road, Cupertino. For more information, or to find out how you can help, call, (408) 255-8033 or send email CCS@CupertinoCommunityService.org.
